Thermal Scope & Sight Series Overview

ZanVision's thermal scopes and sights portfolio delivers uncooled thermal imaging capability in weapon-mountable and handheld form factors engineered for field durability under demanding tactical conditions. Built on high-sensitivity VOx microbolometer detector cores with industry-standard NETD performance, these devices provide target detection, recognition, and identification in total darkness, through smoke, fog, and light foliage — conditions where image intensifier (night vision) systems fail.

The lineup covers clip-on and dedicated thermal weapon sight configurations, handheld thermal monoculars for reconnaissance, and multi-function thermal sighting systems with integrated laser rangefinder (LRF) and ballistic calculator modules. All products are designed, tested, and validated to MIL-STD-810G standards for shock, vibration, and environmental resilience.

Detector and Imaging Performance

ZanVision thermal scopes and sights are built around uncooled VOx microbolometer detector cores available in three resolution tiers:

  • 384×288 (12μm pixel pitch): Entry-tier resolution for short-to-medium range engagement. Provides sufficient detail for target detection and recognition at distances up to 600m for human-sized targets, depending on lens configuration. Suited for patrol rifles, designated marksman rifles, and handheld observation devices where cost-effectiveness is a primary driver.
  • 640×512 (12μm pixel pitch): Mid-tier resolution delivering four times the pixel count of the entry tier. Extends identification range to 1,200m and beyond for human-sized targets under optimal atmospheric conditions. The higher pixel density supports finer reticle alignment and target discrimination — the standard choice for precision rifle platforms, crew-served weapon observation, and border patrol operations.
  • 1280×1024 (12μm pixel pitch): High-end flagship resolution for long-range precision engagement. With over four times the detail of the 640×512 tier, this resolution enables positive target identification at distances exceeding 2,000m under favorable conditions. Targets counter-sniper operations, long-range anti-materiel engagement, and strategic reconnaissance where target detail at extreme range determines mission success or failure.

Thermal sensitivity across the product line is specified at NETD ≤ 35mK (f/1.0, 300K), ensuring reliable detection of low-contrast thermal signatures in challenging environmental conditions — pre-dawn hours when ambient thermal contrast is minimal, overcast conditions, and maritime environments where targets blend against a thermally uniform sea background.

Weapon-Mounted Durability MIL-STD-810G

Weapon-mounted thermal sights must withstand recoil shock forces far exceeding those experienced by handheld or vehicle-mounted sensors. ZanVision's weapon sight product line is designed and validated to MIL-STD-810G standards, with specific focus on:

  • Shock (Method 516.6): Recoil impulse testing up to 1,000g peak acceleration for centerfire rifle calibers up to .338 Lapua Magnum. Recoil testing is performed on live-fire test platforms across multiple weapon systems and calibers to validate mounting interface integrity, optical alignment retention, and electronic component reliability under repeated shock loading.
  • Vibration (Method 514.6): Transport and operational vibration profiles covering ground vehicle, rotary-wing aircraft, and fixed-wing aircraft transport environments. Testing validates that no mechanical resonances exist within the operational vibration spectrum that could degrade image quality or cause fastener loosening.
  • Environmental (Methods 501.5, 502.5, 507.5): Operational temperature range of -40°C to +60°C, with storage survival to -50°C and +70°C. Humidity testing at 95% RH non-condensing validates seal integrity against moisture ingress during extended field deployment.
  • Ingress Protection: IP67-rated housing on weapon sight models, providing complete dust ingress protection and water immersion resistance to 1 meter depth for 30 minutes — ensuring operability after river crossings, heavy rainfall, and muddy field conditions.

Athermalized Optics

Thermal weapon sights and handheld monoculars in ZanVision's portfolio utilize athermalized optical designs that maintain focus and image quality across the full operational temperature range without active thermal compensation mechanisms. The athermalization approach compensates for the temperature-dependent refractive index change of lens materials (dn/dT) through passive optical design — combining materials with complementary thermal-optic coefficients (germanium, chalcogenide glass, zinc selenide) to cancel thermal defocus.

This passive athermalization eliminates the need for motorized focus compensation, reducing power consumption, mechanical complexity, and potential points of failure — all critical considerations for battery-operated field equipment where reliability and runtime are paramount.

OEM Connectivity

Thermal scopes and sights offer multiple connectivity options for data export and system integration:

  • On-board recording: Internal storage (32GB–128GB) for video and still image capture with timestamp overlay, supporting post-mission debrief and evidence documentation.
  • Wi-Fi streaming: Real-time video streaming to mobile devices and tactical tablets for remote observation, team situational awareness, and commander's override functionality.
  • External display output: HDMI and analog video outputs for integration with helmet-mounted displays, vehicle displays, and external recording systems.
  • Serial interfaces: RS-232 / RS-485 for integration with ballistic computers, laser rangefinders, and C2 systems.

Deployment Scenarios

ZanVision thermal scopes and sights are deployed across a wide range of operational scenarios:

  • Infantry / Special Operations: Clip-on thermal sights (mounted in front of existing day optics) enable rapid transition between day and thermal observation without re-zeroing. Dedicated thermal weapon sights provide an all-in-one aiming solution with digital reticles and ballistic compensation.
  • Border Patrol / Perimeter Security: Handheld thermal monoculars for mobile reconnaissance, paired with weapon sights for engagement capability. The combination enables detection, recognition, and response within a single operator workflow.
  • Law Enforcement Tactical Teams: Thermal imaging through smoke, dust, and light concealment provides critical situational awareness during high-risk entries and search operations where visibility is compromised.
  • Wildlife Management / Conservation: Handheld thermal observation devices for nocturnal wildlife census, anti-poaching patrols, and search-and-rescue operations in remote terrain.

All products support OEM customization of reticle patterns, color palettes, startup splash screens, and firmware feature sets. Contact ZanVision with your operational requirements for a tailored configuration proposal.
